RV Roof Repair: How to Fix a Leaking Roof and Rotted Wood

A slow leak in your RV roof is easy to ignore. It starts as a faint water stain on the ceiling, a soft spot near the vent, maybe a slight musty smell after rain. By the time most RV owners investigate, the damage underneath has been spreading for months.

How to Find an RV Roof Leak

The poke test. A flat-blade screwdriver or a moisture meter probe is your best tool. Step 1: Define the Damage Zone
Use your screwdriver poke test to map the full extent of soft wood. Mark the boundary with chalk or tape. You need to remove everything that has lost structural integrity — removing too little and leaving compromised wood behind is the most common DIY mistake on this repair.
Step 2: Remove the Roofing Material
Carefully cut through and peel back the roof membrane over the damaged area. On rubber roofs, a utility knife does the job — work slowly to avoid cutting into good membrane you’ll need to adhere the patch to. Set the membrane aside if it’s in good enough condition to re-use as a pattern.
Step 3: Remove the Rotted Decking
